A Philanthropic Spirit: Retired teacher's estate to benefit the social work fund at Arkansas Children's Northwest

Giving back to others is a way of life for retired teacher Paul Christ.

Over the years, Paul has given thousands of hours to help others in need. These acts of kindness—both large and small—are simply a way of life for him. Paul's record of service includes driving military veterans to medical appointments; supporting a local school by providing teaching resources and food, clothing, and hygiene products for needy children; and even rescuing dogs.

Recently, Paul added another important philanthropic pursuit to his exemplary record of service—he's included Arkansas Children's Northwest in his estate plans. This generous gift ensures his service to others will continue long into the future.

He comes by his philanthropic spirit honestly. "When I was growing up, we were poor…we ate, but didn't have a lot of extras," says Paul. "So I like to help children in need."

Paul realizes that, when children are hospitalized, their parents often can't be with them because they have to work, have other children at home, or because of financial limitations. He says, "I can't imagine being a mom or dad and not being near my child when they need me the most."

Paul's affinity for underserved children and their families led to his interest in supporting the social work fund at Arkansas Children's Northwest.

The social work fund provides gas cards, emergency accommodations and other needs for families who suddenly find themselves with sick or injured children at Arkansas Children's Northwest. This fund also helps make sure kids get to celebrate holidays, birthdays—even a visit from the Tooth Fairy—while in the hospital.

"I don't have kids or grandkids, and was beginning to worry about what to do with my estate," says Paul. "But the solution was simple—I filled out the paperwork to make Arkansas Children's Northwest the beneficiary of my mutual funds, payable at my death. My problem was solved."

Making Arkansas Children's the beneficiary of an investment account, bank account, retirement account, or even a life insurance policy is an easy and flexible way to leave a legacy and make a transformative impact.

Changing the beneficiary designation is usually as simple as filling out a form with the account administrator so the person or organization you choose will later receive what's remaining in the account after your passing. This smart giving strategy allows you to retain ownership of the account while living; provides a mechanism to support multiple beneficiaries; and gives you the flexibility to change your mind if priorities shift in the future.

Not only was this method the right answer to Paul's problem, but this beneficiary designation gift will also be the right answer that serves some of the most vulnerable families being cared for at Arkansas Children's Northwest.

Because of Paul's extraordinary vision, his philanthropic spirit, and just a few minutes of his time, families in need will now have essential resources through one of the most difficult times of their lives.
